The Four Marks of the Church Catholic: One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic

HOSTS: David Wickenden and Fr. Dan Shoemake

  1. One: We are to be united in heart, soul, mind, and strength.

  2. Holy: We are to be a set apart people for God.

  3. Catholic: We are to embody the entire expression and teaching of the Church.

  4. Apostolic: Christians maintain the apostolic tradition and the teachings of the Church are guarded by the Bishops.

One

  • Ephesians 4:4-6 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.

  • John 10:30 The Father and I are one.”

  • John 17:11 Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one.

  • John 17:21 that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us

  • Galatians 3:28 There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.

  • 1 Corinthians 12:27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.

  • Just as God is one, so his Church is to be united as one.

  • This is not only in belief, this is in practice, intent, and emotion.

  • A note about the current disunity of the Church.

Holy:

  • Exodus 19:6 but you shall be for me a priestly kingdom and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the Israelites.”

  • Leviticus 20:26 You shall be holy to me; for I the Lord am holy, and I have separated you from the other peoples to be mine.

  • Leviticus 21:8 and you shall treat them as holy, since they offer the food of your God; they shall be holy to you, for I the Lord, I who sanctify you, am holy.

  • 1 Thessalonians 4:7 7 For God did not call us to impurity but in holiness.

  • 1 Peter 1:16 16 for it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

  • We are set apart. We are made for God.

Catholic

  • 1 Peter 3:18 For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit,

  • Romans 6:10 The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.

  • The Church contains within itself the whole of Christ’s universal sacrifice: 1 Peter 3:18, Romans 6:10

  • Matthew 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

  • The Church is to go to the Universe - it is for the whole world

  • 2 Timothy 1:13-14 Hold to the standard of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Guard the good treasure entrusted to you, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us.

  • 1 Corinthians 15:3 For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures,

  • The Church maintains the teachings passed down to it

Apostolic:

  • Eph 2:19-20 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone.

  • We keep the teaching of those who were sent out

  • Matthew 28:19: Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit
